The KNUST branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has described as unconstitutional the dissolution of the university’s Governing Council.  Reacting to the development after an Executive Committee meeting, the KNUST branch of UTAG said it is disturbed “by the dissolution of the University’s Governing Council by Government  which is in disregard to the Act and Statutes governing the University.

President of the  KNUST chapter of -UTAG Professor Eric Forkuo, speaking on “Behind The News” said it does not think  the action taken by government is the best way to resolve the impasse. He indicated that UTAG will be meeting today to find the way forward.

The National Youth Authority has however welcomed governments intervention in dissolving the Governing Council of the KNUST and setting up an Interim Committee. The Authority’s Chief Executive Emmanuel Assigri said NYA’s sudden interest in the developments at the KNUST is because the rights of students are being trampled upon and there is the need to defend them but that does not mean the Authority supports vandalism.

Meanwhile the Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Education Vincent Asafuah hopes in fourteen days, the university will be reopened.
