The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has officially opened the fishing season for Canoe and Inshore Fishers.

This comes after Saturday, July 31, marked the end of the closed season.

The sector Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson at the official ceremony in Takoradi in the Western Region was happy with the level of compliance from fishers during the Closed Season.

She said implementation of the Closed Season forms part of strategies agreed upon with stakeholders to reduce excessive fishing pressure and over exploitation of the country’s fish stocks.

It is also to allow recovery of overexploited fish stocks and help rebuild the depleted stocks.

Madam Hawa Koomson asked fishers to stay away from Saiko, light fishing, the use of dynamite, DDT among other illegal fishing practices.
