The Ghana Federation of Disability Organization says it is not convinced by a directive from the government to reassign toll collectors, most of whom are persons with disabilities following the abolishing of road tolls in the 2022 budget.
To this end, the Federation says it has written a letter to the Minister of Roads and Highways for the reassignment but is yet to receive any feedback. Chairman of the National Advocacy Committee Alexander, Bankole Williams told Nathaniel Nartey that the Federation has doubts on the reassignment due to past experiences. He said some of its members were made redundant since last year following similar promises after the Kube-ase Toll Booth in the Ashanti Region was closed down.
”Last year November the Ministry closed down the Kube-ase toll booth where some of our members were working and they were told that they would be reassigned but nothing has happened to them. For us we clearly have that experience so we immediately wrote a letter to the Ministry of Road and Highways. We want government to give us specifics of the reassignment, what are they reassigning them to go do, are they sending them to areas where it will be conducive for them to work as per their condition?”.
Mr. Williams was not happy about how government implemented the abolishing of road toll collection and called for further engagements on the issue.
“The manner in which the government sought to go about the termination of road toll collection is highly deplorable. At the very least there is a whole economy around road tolls and government should have engaged those involved in road toll collection”.
