GBC adopts ChoralFest to showcase Veteran and Contemporary Choral Music

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, has climaxed its heritage month with a choral music festival dubbed GBC Choralfest 2022 at the head office in Accra. The choral music is to project works by veterans and contemporary composers.

Six choral groups led by the Evergreen GBC Choir thrilled the audience with some Ghanaian patriotic songs. In a brief remark, the Director-General of GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan, said the maiden event is to also highlight the essence of indigenous Ghanaian choral music as well as build on the pioneering works of the country’s great music legends. He indicated that GBC intends to make the choral festival an annual event.

Mary Atule Azure reports that the month of March has been designated as Heritage Month to celebrate the rich culture and traditions of Ghana. In view of this, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, launched its Heritage Month dubbed “Embracing Our Unique Ghanaian Diversity”. Throughout the month, content on GBC television and radio networks focused on indigenous heritage of the country which included food, language, music as well as way of dressing.

GBC’s Choral Music Festival has come to stay and it will be used to portray works of veteran and contemporary musicians to instill patriotism, especially in the youth. The Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan said it is important to ensure that the heritage of the country is preserved for generations unborn.

A Music Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Ben Amakye who spoke on the essence of choral music said music gives Ghanaians an identity and a way to express themselves in many contexts.

Indeed Choral Music has come a long way and needs to be preserved.
