The spokesperson of the Gabonese President, Ike Ngouoni, has confirmed that the President is seriously ill, but recuperating, ending weeks of official silence on his condition.
Speculation has mounted on the health of President Ali Bongo, 59, with some reports saying he suffered a stroke. He is being treated in Saudi Arabia, with the initial announcement last month that he was suffering from fatigue.
His spokesman said Mr. Bongo is “recovering all of his physical abilities”.
He made no mention of a stroke, but noted that the President had suffered bleeding, which requires medical care.
President Ali Bongo came to power in 2009, after succeeding his father, Omar Bongo who governed the country for more than 40 years.
