A Bill to review the current law to protect and preserve Ghana’s animal resources, has been sent to Parliament. The Bill when passed into Law, will deter the uncontrolled harvesting of animals, especially the endangered species such as pangolin.

Many depend on the harvesting of animals for their economic survival, therefore the annual ban is seen as punishment and difficult to comply, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of offenders.

In an interview with GBC News, Manager of the Kumasi Zoo, Dr. Meyir Ziekah, appealed to Ghanaians to cooperate with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, to ensure the ban on harvesting of animals which came into force on August 1 and ends December 1 is strictly enforced.

Dr. Zieka said the wanton destruction of wildlife affects human survival.

Touching on the theme for this year, Dr. Zieka advised the public against patronizing bush meat during the period when the ban is in force, as their contribution towards protecting the animals for posterity.

Dr. Zieka also highlighted the relationship between the Zoo and the National Park, adding that the Zoo helps to maintain and sustain the environment.
