Former President John Dramani Mahama says the challenges facing the implementation of Free SHS are adversely affecting the quality of secondary education.
Addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency as part of his flagbearership campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr Mahama wondered why this year’s students are being made to spend just 41 days in the classroom under the double track system.
He said turning secondary education into green-gold “traffic light” under the double track system could be detrimental to academic work of students, adding that it has brought pressure on parents to raise additional money to pay for remedial classes for their wards.
Mr Mahama observed that the Free SHS policy is a constitutional requirement and it is therefore important that it is properly implemented.
Mr Mahama has therefore reiterated his point that a new NDC administration will fix the challenges confronting free secondary education in Ghana by eliminating the double track system.
He promised to build new dormitories, additional classroom blocks and also complete all the 200 Community Day Secondary School buildings as part of measures to reverse the double track system.
Mr Mahama has therefore urged delegates of the NDC to give him the mandate to lead the party to victory in the 2020 elections.
