Members of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana say they will resist any move by the government to introduce new taxes in the mid-year budget review.

The Executive Secretary of the Association, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, has, however, admonished the government, through the Minister of Finance not to introduce any new taxes in its mid-year budget review.

Mr. Awingobit’s admonishing comes days after Ghana received an amount of $600 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the first trench of the $3 million three-year extended credit facility.

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, speaking in an interview, reiterated that members of the association would resist any attempt by the government to introduce new taxes to the detriment of their businesses.

“We hope that since the IMF money is in, the government will not attempt to introduce new taxes, because we will resist any attempt. Very soon they will read the mid-year budget review, and I want to advise the government to desist from introducing any new taxes. Any new taxes will have dire consequences on businesses,” Mr. Awingobit explained.
