“Stop putting pressure on the government to spend when there is no money. Support the government in taxing and let the economy live within its means.”
These were some of the submissions made by the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Kwaku Kwarteng when he set the ball rolling as MPs commented on the Mid-Year Budget Review statement delivered by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta on Monday, July 31, 2023.
He said tax exemptions have created an avenue for corruption and called for a review of tax exemptions under investment promotion.
Ranking member on the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, said he was saddened by the contents of the statement as it did not inspire any hope in government finances.
He said the depreciation of the currency has dipped, and the reserves of the central bank are nothing to write home about.
