A Myanmar court will today hear an appeal of two Reuters reporters sentenced to seven years in jail on charges of breaking the Official Secrets Act.

The two journalists were found guilty in September in a landmark case that raised questions about Myanmar’s progress toward democracy and sparked an outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates.

Defence lawyers filed an appeal against the conviction last month, citing evidence of a police set-up and lack of proof.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said the conviction had nothing to do with freedom of expression and that the journalists were sentenced for mishandling official secrets.
