Green Ghana Day: Abu Jinapor garners active participation in planting 10 million seedlings

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has called on Ghanaians to get involved in the 2024 Green Ghana project.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, the Minister said 10 million seedlings are expected to be planted.

He noted that the initiative forms part of the government’s aggressive afforestation and reafforestation program aimed at restoring Ghana’s degraded landscape.

Mr. Jinapor said Ghana has recorded about 30 million surviving trees since 2021.

He therefore asked for the active participation of all to ride on the theme; which is “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow”.

Mr. Jinapor noted that the government since 2021 has contributed about 10 million cedis to the tree-planting exercise.

He however called for private corporations to continue to support the initiative to lessen the funding burden on the government.

Mr. Jinapor said the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is also targeting on leveraging on Ghana’s forest to raise capital from the carbon market.

The Minister further stated that, there are several interventions implemented by the government to minimize illegal exploitation of Ghana’s natural resources, and sustain the environment for the next generation.

The 2024 Green Ghana Day is the 4th edition of the tree planting initiative which was instituted in 2021.

So far, about 41 million trees have been planted across the country.

The Green Ghana Day is scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2024.
