Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, 15th July, 2024. This action comes in response to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) controversial decision to sell a substantial 60% of its shares in four major hotels to Rock City.

Speaking on the sidelines of an Emergency meeting to decide on its next line of action after the National Pensions Regulatory Commission (NPRA) gave the green light for the sale of SSNIT shares in some six hotels, the Secretary General of Trades Union Congress, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah said the final and official communique will be out soon.

“We are breaking down to take a final decision. But the general consensus is that from Monday we are tired. We are the majority owners of SSNIT. And as majority stakeholders, we have interest. And nobody can rob us of our position and go ahead with the sale of the hotels. They are our properties. We have our contributions and we are the majority. We hold management. We are responsible and we want to hold them to reverse the transaction” he stated.

SSNIT’s decision to offload its shares has been met with fierce opposition from various labour unions who argue that the sale could lead to adverse consequences for workers and the hospitality industry at large.

The hotels in question are significant assets, employing a considerable number of people whose livelihoods may be jeopardized by this transaction.

Organised Labour’s call for a strike is aimed at pressuring SSNIT to reconsider its decision and engage in a more transparent dialogue with stakeholders.
