Recent observations at the busy National Theatre intersection showed a combination of good road infrastructure and persistent safety issues. The crossroads, which link important parts of Accra, have clearly defined pedestrian crossings, operational traffic signals, and well-marked roadways. But there are still problems with driving safety behaviour.

Some pedestrians crossed at undesignated locations, while others disregarded traffic signals, exhibiting unsafe behaviour. More public education is required, as evidenced by a brief experiment that revealed many pedestrians are ignorant of the appropriate crossing places.

Additionally, mini billboards placed on traffic islands obstruct views for drivers and pedestrians, especially children, creating a safety hazard. While these billboards generate revenue, they compromise road safety.

Although the National Theatre crossroads is generally kept up rather well, the city’s authorities need to step up their efforts to enforce traffic laws and inform the public about road safety. Maintaining a safe environment for all Accra road users requires ongoing improvement.
