President Mahama has hinted that his administration is in consultation with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, for the Anti-LGBT bill to be introduced in Parliament as a government-sponsored bill rather than a private members’ bill.
The President made this revelation on Friday, February 28, 2025, while fellowshipping with the clergy at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
President Mahama reaffirmed his Christian values, stating that only two genders exist—a man and a woman.
“As a Christian, I uphold the values that only two genders exist: male and female, and that marriage is between a man and a woman. I have spoken with the Speaker so that the renewal of the expired Proper Family Values Bill will be introduced as a government-sponsored bill rather than as a private members’ motion.
I hope that this consultation will result in the reintroduction of the Proper Family Values Bill. I believe that my leadership should reflect the values of the people I govern, and on this, I stand firm,” the President reiterated.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which has now expired, was initially introduced as a private members’ bill in Parliament. It successfully went through all reading stages and was approved by Parliament, awaiting presidential assent by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
However, former President Akufo-Addo refused to assent to the bill before leaving office.
With the bill now expired, it will need to be reintroduced in Parliament for further action to be taken.
