The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a Statutory Public Holiday to commemorate May Day, also known as Workers’ Day. This declaration applies nationwide, and all relevant institutions, organizations, and the general public are expected to observe the holiday accordingly.
May Day celebrations in Ghana dates back to 1960, when the country’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was declared the “First Number One Worker” by the Trades Union Congress. The holiday honors the achievements of the labor movement and advocates for workers’ rights and better working conditions.
The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), typically organizes a grand parade to mark the occasion, which features both trade unions and the military.
This year’s celebration under the theme “Striving for peace and stability to drive Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice,” highlights the need for industrialization and trade to generate decent employment and promote economic growth.
