The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has called on lawyers to closely follow the ongoing proceedings to remove the Chief Justice. She emphasised that it is important to ensure that justice is not only done but also seen to be done.

Speaking at the GBA’s mid-year conference, Ms. Ghartey described the case as historic and urged members of the Bar to help educate the public about the process.

“One issue that many Ghanaians are talking about is what it means to have a prima facie case,” she said.

She stressed that because this situation is unprecedented in Ghana’s history, the Bar must keep a close watch and be ready to share its views when necessary.

“It is important that in such matters, justice must not only be done but must clearly be seen to have been done,” she added.

Meanwhile, the GBA has pledged to lead discussions on creating clear rules and guidelines for the removal of high office holders under Article 71 of the Constitution, including judges.

Ms. Ghartey said the Association would soon present proposals to ensure that such important processes are fair, transparent, and carried out promptly.

“It is time to set these rules to avoid any unfairness. Such proceedings should happen speedily and, if possible, in open court because of the public interest they attract,” she said.
