The Government of Ghana has given indefinite residence permits to around 500 Ivorian refugees living in the country.

The ceremony took place in Accra and was led by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. It was attended by the Ivorian Ambassador to Ghana, officials from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the Ghana Refugee Board, and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Hon. Muntaka said the residence permits show Ghana’s strong commitment to helping refugees and asylum seekers. He reminded the refugees that the permits can be taken away if laws are broken, and urged them to follow Ghana’s rules and live peacefully.

“This permit is a sign of welcome and support,” he said, “but it comes with responsibilities.”
