A crunch meeting between the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and the Ministry of Health aimed at resolving the ongoing strike by GRNMA members has ended in a deadlock.

The closed-door meeting, convened by the Health Ministry on Monday, June 9, 2025, in Accra, was intended to reach a consensus on the implementation of improved Conditions of Service (CoS) for members of the association.

GRNMA Vice President, Mr. Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, told journalists after the meeting that the Ministry made it clear the government could not implement the new CoS as previously promised.

He revealed that the government has proposed postponing the implementation to 2026 — a suggestion that GRNMA leadership has firmly rejected.

According to Mr. Akolgo, the Ministry cited budgetary limitations as the primary reason for its inability to fulfil the agreement.

“These Conditions of Service were presented to the incoming government in January, and it was expected that they would be factored into this year’s budget. Unfortunately, we are now being told that the challenges of implementation stem from budget constraints,” he stated.

He added that GRNMA’s National Council would review the outcome of the meeting and determine the next course of action.
