The management of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, GAEC has appointed Prof Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director General with effect from June 16 2025. His appointment became necessary following the retirement of his predecessor, Prof Dickson Adomako.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director,  Commercialization and Communication Directorate of GAEC, Anthony Nana Boateng. The statement mentioned that Prof.

Hasford, has an impeccable career spanning 17 years as a medical physicist and has served in various capacities in GAEC and the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA. Prior to assuming his current appointment, he was Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, SNAS, University of Ghana and Director of Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute of GAEC.

Prof Hasford brings to bear a wealth of experience in nuclear technologies from the international level to his new role as deputy DG of GAEC.

He is the President of the Medical Physicists Federation in Africa (FAMPO), an Executive Committee member of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and project Counterpart of the IAEA. The new Deputy DG of GAEC’s outstanding contributions led to the establishment of the Commission’s annual flagship program on cancer awareness and free screening.

Additionally, Prof. Hasford’s service on various committees in policy development, research, training and mentorship aligns with GAEC’s vision and mission which seek to promote peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for socio-economic development of the country and the sub-region. 

At a meeting mid-year Dunbar, the Director General of GAEC, Prof Samuel Dampare expressed delight at having Prof Hasford as the new Deputy Director General. “Prof Hasford is well endowed with visionary leadership and deep technical knowledge in nuclear science and the workings of GAEC” Prof. Dampare stated. He was optimistic that his deputy will be an invaluable addition to the team as the Commission advances its strategic objectives of using nuclear science to better the lives of Ghanaians. 

In his acceptance speech, Prof Hasford promised to discharge his responsibility in collaboration with all stakeholders in harnessing nuclear technology for sustainable development. He expressed enthusiasm for his new role, saying “It is an honor to serve at this pivotal time of GAEC’s history.
