The Black Queens of Ghana will kick off their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 campaign today, July 7, at exactly 3:30 pm GMT against defending champions South Africa at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.
This opening match marks a crucial opportunity for the Queens to bounce back after missing out on the previous WAFCON tournament, as they aim to make a strong statement in Group C of the competition.
Ghana’s team has been preparing rigorously, including three international warm-up friendlies against Malawi, Botswana, and Nigeria, designed to test their readiness and sharpen tactics ahead of the tournament.
Coach Kim Lars Björkegren emphasized the importance of these matches in building confidence and adapting to different playing styles, especially the high-stakes encounter with Nigeria, which served as a final rehearsal before facing South Africa.

The Black Queens’ group stage schedule includes matches against Mali on July 11 and Tanzania on July 14, with their performance in these games determining advancement to the knockout rounds.
The team is focused on consistent performances throughout the group stage to progress further in the tournament.
Facing South Africa, the reigning champions, presents a formidable challenge, but the Black Queens are motivated to overturn their previous absence from WAFCON and make a significant impact this year.
The match kickoff at 3:30 pm today will be live on GTV Sports Plus.
