The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially resumed campaigning in the Ablekuma North Constituency ahead of the parliamentary rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
The rerun will take place in 19 polling stations and was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary election results.
This move marks a major U-turn for the NPP, which had earlier declared it would boycott the process. The party had maintained that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was the rightful winner and accused the EC of trying to overturn the will of the people by calling for a rerun.
However, following the Accra High Court’s decision to dismiss an application by Nana Akua Afriyie seeking to stop the rerun, the NPP has now decided to fully participate.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s belief that their candidate won the original election.
“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we are resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” he said.
Mr. Frimpong also stated that the NPP’s National Executive Committee had agreed not to back down in the face of the ongoing controversy.
“We are not going to be intimidated,” he added.
According to report from Fauzu Masawudu of Citinews indicates that hundreds of NPP supporters were out in full force campaigning. Supporters said the EC’s decision to retain Nana Akua Afriyie’s photo on the ballot paper encouraged them to rejoin the process.
