Ghana’s Black Satellites began their 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Championship journey with a competitive 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Nigeria at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The thrilling Group A opener saw Ghana take an early lead through Aziz Misbau’s 23rd-minute strike, only for Nigeria to equalize late in the 83rd minute, setting the tone for a tightly contested tournament.

The match reignited one of African football’s fiercest rivalries, with both sides displaying determination and skill under the watchful eyes of passionate home fans. Ghana’s early dominance was rewarded when Misbau scored to put the Black Satellites ahead, giving the hosts a morale boost at halftime. However, Nigeria’s resilience shone through as they battled back to secure a share of the points late in the game.

Head coach Desmond Ofei had emphasized the importance of a strong start in this crucial fixture, knowing that every match in the three-team Group A would be vital. Despite the draw, Ofei praised his team’s effort and focus, highlighting the squad’s readiness to fight for glory on home soil. The Black Satellites will now turn their attention to their next group match against Benin on Sunday July 13, 2025, aiming to build momentum.

The WAFU B U20 Championship serves as a key platform for nurturing young talent across West Africa and is a stepping stone toward qualification for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations. With only two teams advancing from each group, the competition promises high stakes and intense battles. Ghana’s hosting role adds extra pressure but also offers the advantage of familiar surroundings and fervent local support.
