Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid a visit today to former MP and former Minister for Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson, at her home to express concern and solidarity following an attack during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

On Friday, July 11, polling station chaos erupted when a group of unidentified assailants described as “macho men”stormed the St Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor. Among those assaulted was Hawa Koomson, who was violently attacked as she observed the rerun. Eyewitnesses and reports highlight that the attack was sudden and coordinated, causing widespread panic amid inadequate police protection
Reacting swiftly, Dr Bawumia traveled to Hawa Koomson’s residence on Sunday, July 13, two days after the incident, offering moral support and calling for accountability.

In a statement today, he expressed profound disappointment, stressing that such violence “has no place in Ghana’s democracy” and urging authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice .
Hawa Koomson took to Facebook to express her heartfelt appreciation for the visit, stating:”This morning, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his team visited me at my residence to check on my health after I was brutally assaulted by thugs during the Ablekuma North Rerun. My family and I are extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture. “
The Minority in Parliament, while condemning the financial and political disruption caused by the violence, also lambasted senior officials from the ruling NDC for allegedly praising the attackers—highlighting a disturbing acceptance of political violence
Similarly, the Ghana Journalists Association condemned the attack, citing assaults on journalists covering the rerun—further underscoring the deteriorating security and public safety situation during the electoral process.
