Governance and Policy Analyst and former Minister of State, Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to govern with humility, responsiveness, and a genuine spirit of public service.
Speaking at the Crossfire Governance and Leadership Public Lecture Series at the Ghana Technology University College on Friday, July 19, 2025, under the theme “Conversation on Resetting the Nation,” Dr. Opong-Fosu stressed that humility in leadership is fundamental to sustaining the trust and goodwill of Ghanaians, especially after the strong mandate handed to the NDC in the 2024 general elections.
“A responsive government listens, learns, and leads with humility. A responsible opposition critiques with evidence, proposes alternatives, and upholds democracy,” Dr. Opong-Fosu declared.
He emphasized that the success of President Mahama’s second term and indeed Ghana’s Reset Agenda rests on two pillars: a government that listens and delivers, and an opposition that critiques constructively without undermining national interest.
Dr. Opong-Fosu urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rise to the occasion by embracing its constitutional duty of holding the government accountable,not through obstructionism or propaganda, but through evidence-based critiques that prioritise national development.
He cautioned members of the ruling NDC against repeating the past mistakes that once alienated the public, particularly arrogance, corruption, and abuse of power.
“These tendencies are not just political mistakes. They are serious threats to our democracy and to the survival of the NDC itself,” he warned.
Commending President Mahama for what he described as a promising start to his renewed mandate, Dr. Opong-Fosu acknowledged that there is a growing wave of goodwill across the country, even among initial sceptics. However, he reminded the audience that the task of national renewal is a shared responsibility.
“The work of resetting Ghana is not President Mahama’s alone. It is yours. It is mine. It is ours,” he stated emphatically.
