The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that the government is set to introduce a new regulation that will penalize not only drivers but also the owners of overloaded goods.
Under the proposed policy, part of the overloaded goods may be confiscated and auctioned as a deterrent.
“We are bringing a regulation that, instead of surcharging only the drivers, the owners of the loads will also forfeit part of the goods, which will be auctioned,” he stated.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Hon. Agbodza emphasized that the move is part of broader efforts to enforce penalties for overloading and ensure safety on the country’s roads.
He further noted that this initiative aligns with ongoing plans to improve road management, especially with the reintroduction of toll booths.
“We intend to make sure overloading stops after the implementation of the toll booths. It’s also part of our plan to sanitize operations at the various loading stations,” he added.
The Minister assured the public that the plan is well-structured and that the results of these interventions will begin to show within six months.
