Lawyer Anokye Frimpong has strongly defended the Attorney General’s (AG) recent decision to drop charges in several high-profile cases, describing it as a strategic and lawful move aimed at recovering misappropriated state funds.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Lawyer Frimpong cautioned against politicizing the matter and stressed that the AG is simply exercising legal tools that have long existed.
He explained that while previous officeholders may have avoided testing the plea bargain provision, the current Attorney General has done so successfully.
“It’s not a matter of clemency or a favor a particular government is doing to one of its own folks. No, it’s not. It’s part of the law. So it is for us to take advantage of the law,” he stated.
Lawyer Frimpong suggested that the accused persons may have opted for plea bargains to avoid the long and difficult process of criminal trials.
“When it comes to criminal trials, the moment it hits you and you don’t have your freedom, first of all, you’ll be arrested, and see how difficult it is before you get bail,” he noted.
He also dismissed threats from political actors as baseless, adding that legal outcomes can be revisited if new evidence emerges.
He emphasized that the Attorney General’s actions are rooted in legal strategy and not partisanship.
“The NPP knew about the law on plea bargains and nolle prosequi; they just didn’t take advantage of it,” he added.
