The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that nominations for the upcoming Akwatia Constituency by-election will officially open on Monday, August 11, 2025, and close on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

‎The by-election follows the unfortunate passing of the sitting Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Kumi, making the seat vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the Constitution.

‎According to the EC, individuals interested in contesting the seat must submit their nomination forms at the Denkyembour District Office between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day within the nomination period.

‎Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting July 30 until August 13, 2025.

‎Each aspiring candidate is required to submit the forms in four copies, supported by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and endorsed by eighteen other voters in the constituency. In addition, candidates must submit two passport-sized photographs with a red background.

‎The filing fee has been set at GHC10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.

‎‎The by-election itself is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

‎The Electoral Commission has urged the public and all stakeholders to take note of the schedule and act accordingly.
