The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has held a media briefing to provide an in-depth overview of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) and its role in promoting African development. The session, organised ahead of TICAD9, aimed to highlight JICA’s contributions to Africa’s growth and its ongoing partnerships across the continent.
First held in 1993, TICAD was established to promote African development through collaboration between African nations, Japan, and other international partners. Since its inception, the conference has evolved into a key platform for addressing development challenges in Africa and identifying solutions.
At the briefing, JICA outlined its major initiatives and projects that have significantly impacted African development. These range from infrastructure development to human resource training, all tailored to support the continent’s progress.

JICA’s commitment to Africa is rooted in a deep understanding of the continent’s challenges and a shared vision for prosperity. Its approach is centred on human development and long-term sustainability, working hand-in-hand with African countries to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
Several case studies were presented to illustrate the success of JICA’s interventions in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, education, and capacity building. These examples underscored Japan’s unique approach to cooperation—focused on people, partnerships, and tailored solutions.

As TICAD9 approaches, JICA reaffirmed its dedication to playing a leading role in supporting African development. Through its strategic initiatives, the agency seeks to contribute meaningfully to the conference’s goals and foster a more prosperous, inclusive future for Africa.
The media briefing offered key insights into JICA’s ongoing role on the continent and reinforced its status as a committed development partner. With TICAD9 on the horizon, JICA’s efforts are expected to leave a lasting impact on Africa’s development trajectory.
