Ghana’s student-athletes demonstrated outstanding skill and resilience at the first-ever African School Games held in Algeria, bringing home a total of 14 medals, including 2 golds, 3 silvers and 9 bronzes.

This multisport event, uniting young athletes from across Africa, highlighted Ghana’s growing prowess in grassroots sports, especially in racquet sports like badminton. The gold medal victories came solely from badminton, where Ghana’s pairs dominated the competition.

In Girls Doubles, Adu Moslena Ama Korama and Quarcoo Racheal captured the top spot with a commanding performance. Meanwhile, Adu-Mintah Obapomba teamed up with Adu Moslena Ama Korama again to win the Mixed Doubles gold, underscoring the country’s strength in the sport.

Ghana also showcased its boxing talent with two silver medals won by Laryea William in the Boys Flyweight (50kg) category, and Ablorh Abdul Rahman in Boys Lightweight (60kg).

Additional badminton success included a silver in Boys Doubles and bronze medals in Boys Singles and the Badminton Relay event, contributing significantly to Ghana’s medal tally.

Other sports contributed to Ghana’s medal haul as well, with notable bronze finishes in table tennis (Mensah Michael Agyapong), basketball’s 3×3 format, boxing Light Flyweight (48kg), taekwondo and athletics.

Athletes Egyan Christiana earned bronze in Girls Triple Jump, while both the Boys and Girls Medley Relay teams added to the medal list. These achievements highlight Ghana’s diverse sporting talent pipeline.

The country’s 14-medal haul at the African School Games signals a promising future for Ghanaian sports. The event offered a valuable platform for young athletes to gain international experience and exposure.

Ghana’s performance not only celebrates current success but also showcases the potential for continued growth in school-level sports programs across the nation.
