The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has voiced strong support for Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo following racist abuse he endured during AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield.
The match was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo reported the incident to referee Anthony Taylor in line with the league’s anti-discrimination protocol. Despite the abuse, the 24-year-old striker impressively scored twice, though Bournemouth fell 4-2.
In an official statement, the GFA condemned the racial abuse “in the strongest terms,” insisting that racism and bigotry have “no place in football or in society.”
The association commended Semenyo’s composure and dignity, highlighting his choice of “grace over grievance, strength of character over victimhood, and unity over division.” They praised his performance and maturity, emphasizing their unwavering support in the ongoing fight against racism.
Merseyside Police confirmed they arrested a 47-year-old man from Liverpool on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. The individual was identified, removed from the stadium during the match, and taken into custody for questioning the following day.
This swift action signals law enforcement’s commitment to tackling racist behavior in football venues.
Semenyo addressed the incident on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the solidarity shown by the football community, writing, “Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.”
Bournemouth captain Adam Smith also praised Semenyo’s resilience, noting the player’s courage to report the abuse and continue playing, and highlighting the support from Liverpool players toward Semenyo and his teammates.
The Premier League has launched an investigation into the incident, while the English Football Association pledged to work closely with officials, clubs, and authorities to ensure appropriate action.
Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out stood in solidarity with Semenyo, applauding his bravery in calling out the abuse before going on to score twice, stressing the importance of continued efforts to eradicate racism from the game.
