A total of 461,640 candidates, comprising 207,381 males and 254,259 females, from the various Senior High and Technical Schools across the country, are sitting for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which begins today, Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
The 2025 figure of 461,640 represent a marginal increase of 1,029 compared to 2024’s figure of 460,611.
According to the examination body, candidates will sit for 65 subjects, with each student expected to write an average of eight subjects.
This year marks the fourth cohort of Ghanaian students sitting the Ghana-only version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), an arrangement introduced in 2021 following COVID-19 disruptions to the academic calendar.
Unlike their counterparts in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia, who maintain the traditional May/June schedule, Ghanaian candidates now set their own timeline.
Practical and project work for school candidates commenced on August 5, with the first essay and objective papers—including Picture Making—written on Tuesday, August 19.
The 2025 examination is underway at 701 centres across the country.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abass Apaak, cautioned candidates against malpractice and warned both teaching and non-teaching staff not to aid cheating.
The Deputy Minister of Education is admonishing all students writing this year’s examination to uphold integrity and discipline throughout the period.
