The government has lifted the curfew imposed on Nalerigu township and surrounding communities in the North East Region, citing improved security conditions and the commitment of local stakeholders to sustain peace.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), who explained that the decision followed advice from the National Security Council.

“This has been necessitated by the genuine desire of the chiefs and people of the area to sustain peace, as well as the improvement in the security situation,” the statement said.

Government expressed appreciation to chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents for their role in restoring calm, urging them to continue resolving disputes through dialogue.

“Government continues to express its gratitude… and urges them to continue to resort to peaceful means in solving their problems,” the Interior Minister added.

Curfews are typically imposed in conflict-prone areas in Ghana to help security agencies manage tensions and prevent violence. In the North East Region, chieftaincy and land disputes have occasionally triggered unrest, leading to movement restrictions.

The lifting of the curfew in Nalerigu is expected to boost economic activities, revive night markets, and improve transportation and social gatherings, which had been curtailed by the restrictions.
