The Black Stars returned to winning ways in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8, 2025. Under pressure after a disappointing draw against Chad last week, Otto Addo’s side showed resilience and determination to secure all three points in front of their passionate home crowd.
The decisive moment came early in the second half when defender Alexander Djiku capitalized on a mistake by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra. In the 49th minute, Djiku reacted quickest inside the box to score from a corner kick, sending the stadium into celebration.
Just moments earlier, Caleb Yirenkyi had come close with a powerful shot from distance, signaling Ghana’s increased attacking intent after a cautious first half. Mali responded by controlling much of the game’s rhythm in the latter stages, pressuring the Black Stars deep in their territory.
Despite the visitors’ dominance and several threatening attacks, Ghana’s defense and goalkeeper stood firm, denying Mali any chance to equalize. The Black Stars’ midfield anchor, Thomas Partey, played a key role in managing the game and absorbing Mali’s late pressure.
While Ghana struggled to create clear-cut chances, forwards Jordan Ayew and Mohammed Kudus worked tirelessly against a disciplined Malian defense. The victory marks an important boost for Ghana, lifting them back into contention in Group I and restoring much-needed confidence ahead of upcoming fixtures.
