Ghana Football Association (GFA) President and CAF 2nd Vice-President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, officially launched the CAF Safe Stadium Initiative workshop on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the GFA Headquarters in Accra. The three-day programme aims to enhance stadium safety and security across Ghana and African football as a whole.

Speaking on behalf of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, Simeon-Okraku emphasized the necessity of creating secure environments for players, fans, and all football stakeholders. “Since our President took office, one of his foremost promises has been to deliver football in a very safe environment for all consumers of our sport,” he stated.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration between CAF and its Member Associations in sharing vital knowledge to protect lives and property during football events. Reflecting on the tragic 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster, Simeon-Okraku urged participants to “close the gaps” and ensure the delivery of football matches in a safe and responsible manner.

The workshop drawn together Safety and Security Officers from all 18 Ghana Premier League clubs, members of the GFA Security Committee, and 16 Regional Sports Police Officers. Together, they were engaged in training sessions led by CAF experts Xololi Nokithula Vilakati and Sylvanus Obi.

Topics covered include stadium safety regulations, accreditation processes, crowd management techniques, and matchday security protocols. The initiative aims to build a sustainable framework to safeguard football venues and enhance the overall experience for everyone involved in the beautiful game.
