Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has paid a surprise visit to the Tamale Technical University (TaTU) following last week’s violent confrontation between students, management, and the police.

The protest, which initially began peacefully, escalated when police attempted to disperse the demonstrating students. Eyewitnesses say officers fired warning shots and deployed water cannons, sparking clashes between the students and security personnel.

During his visit, Mr. Iddrisu met with university management and student leaders, urging both sides to prioritize peace and adopt non-violent means of resolving disputes.

“I have engaged with management and student leaders to prioritize peace and refrain from violent conduct in addressing their grievances,” the Minister said.

He further assured the students that their concerns would be addressed but stressed the need for dialogue through proper channels.

“I assured the students again that their grievances should be channeled through management to address their concerns,” he added.

The Minister’s intervention comes amid growing calls for restraint and improved communication between university authorities and students to prevent further unrest.
