The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the Tamale Central by-election after emerging as the sole candidate in the race.
The declaration was made by the Tamale Central Returning Officer, Muniru Musah, who cited Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127 as the legal basis for the announcement.
According to Mr. Musah, Professor Seidu’s unopposed candidacy met all the requirements stipulated in the electoral laws of Ghana, enabling the EC to declare him the duly elected Member of Parliament for the constituency.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a tragic helicopter crash nearly two months ago. Upon the opening of nominations, three individuals, including Professor Seidu, successfully filed to contest. However, the political dynamics shifted dramatically when the other two candidates withdrew their candidacies shortly after filing, leaving Professor Seidu as the lone contender.
In response to the withdrawals, the EC, acting in accordance with CI 127, reopened nominations for a 10-day period to allow for potential new entrants. Despite the extension, no additional candidates stepped forward to challenge Professor Seidu.
With the close of the extended nomination period and no opposition in sight, the Electoral Commission formally declared Professor Seidu as the MP-elect for Tamale Central.
This development marks a significant moment in the political landscape of the constituency, as Professor Seidu assumes office without a single vote being cast.
In his brief remarks following the declaration, the Deputy Regional Secretary of the NDC, Ziblim Saaka, expressed gratitude to the constituents and reaffirmed the commitment of the NDC, to development and inclusive leadership in Tamale Central.
Professor Seidu is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to begin his official duties.
