The Member of Parliament for Talensi in the Upper East Region (UER), Daniel Mahama, has extended support to dry season farmers in his constituency with improved seeds to boost food production. The initiative, according to the MP, is aimed at enhancing food security and improving livelihoods.

Farmers in Talensi have over the years relied heavily on rain-fed agriculture, making their livelihoods vulnerable to the changing climate. During the dry season, many farmlands are left bare due to the unavailability of quality inputs and resources. But that is changing.

The Member of Parliament for Talensi, Daniel Mahama, has supplied many farmers across the constituency with improved varieties of seeds for dry season farming. These include boxes of improved onion and pepper seeds that are drought-tolerant and have shorter maturity periods handed over to the Talensi District Director of Agriculture for onward distribution to dry season farmers across the district.

In all, 62 farmers identified by the District Directorate of Agriculture are set to benefit from this initiative. According to the MP, the gesture forms part of his vision to empower rural farmers, reduce hunger, and create alternative sources of income for households during the lean season.

He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of the Talensi economy, hence the need to support farmers with the right resources to improve yields.

Farmers who benefited from the distribution expressed gratitude, saying the improved seeds will help them expand their farms and increase productivity. They called on other stakeholders, including government and NGOs, to complement the effort by providing irrigation facilities and access to markets.

The support by MP Daniel Mahama is expected to enhance dry season farming in Talensi, promote food sufficiency, and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the constituency.
