The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has held an interactive meeting with courier and delivery riders to discuss some of the major challenges confronting their operations, including excessive platform charges, police harassment, and regulatory restrictions.

During the engagement, Hon. George acknowledged the vital role courier and delivery services play in Ghana’s growing digital economy, particularly in supporting e-commerce and small businesses. He assured the riders that the government recognizes their contribution and is committed to creating a fair and enabling environment for their work.

He revealed that his ministry, in collaboration with the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Transport, is developing a policy framework that will allow independent riders to register directly on digital delivery platforms without necessarily going through fleet operators. According to him, this initiative will promote fairness, reduce costs, and enhance the riders’ income and working conditions.

Hon. George further expressed concern about frequent reports of police harassment faced by riders while on duty. He pledged to engage the Minister for the Interior and the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to address the issue, ensuring that riders who are legitimately working are treated with respect and not unfairly targeted.

He concluded by encouraging courier riders to comply with all necessary regulations, maintain professionalism, and continue contributing positively to Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
