The Ghana Police Service, through its Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has arrested ten suspects for allegedly creating fake online food delivery platforms to defraud unsuspecting customers.
According to a police statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer at the CID, the arrests followed sustained intelligence operations targeting a syndicate involved in online fraud schemes posing as legitimate food delivery services.
The initial six suspects — identified as Wonder Sakpiti, Seninam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah — were picked up on October 1, 2025, at Sogakope during a special operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had created fake websites and social media pages impersonating well-known food delivery brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko. Victims who placed orders on these fraudulent platforms were directed to make advance payments through mobile money, after which they never received the food they ordered.
The police further disclosed that, in some cases, the suspects gained unauthorized access to victims’ mobile money wallets and bank accounts under the pretense of assisting them with payments, subsequently withdrawing funds illegally.
Digital devices believed to have been used in the fraudulent operations were retrieved and are undergoing forensic examination.
A follow-up operation on October 12, 2025, at Haatso in Accra led to the arrest of the alleged ringleader, Elijah Sotama Etse, also known as “Pop Smoke,” along with Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli. In total, twelve mobile phones were seized from the suspects for further investigation.
All ten suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court today, Monday, October 13, 2025.
The Ghana Police Service has urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar fraudulent online platforms to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations.
