President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the establishment of a new 20-year Green Digital City Project as part of Ghana’s national transformation agenda, designed to integrate cutting-edge technology, sustainable urban design, and innovation.
Addressing investors and government officials at the Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, President Mahama revealed that the landmark project will span three regions; Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta positioning Ghana as a hub for green and digital innovation in West Africa.
“As part of Ghana’s transformation, we plan to establish a new Green City that will straddle the three regions of Ghana; Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra,” President Mahama stated.
He announced that an inter-ministerial committee will soon be inaugurated to guide the design and feasibility study of the project, adding that a transactional advisor will be appointed to lead the planning and investment process.
“This will be a Green Digital City that will display cutting-edge technology in urban design, planning, and innovation,” the President said. “The city is planned as a 20-year project to be executed in four phases. My expectation is that the first phase will commence before my tenure of office runs out.”
The Green Digital City will be executed in four major phases over two decades, with the first phase expected to commence before the end of President Mahama’s tenure. The city will be developed using sustainable building standards, renewable energy systems, and advanced digital tools for planning, governance, and service delivery.
President Mahama extended an invitation to Chinese investors to partner with Ghana in the development of the project, describing it as a “transformational initiative” that will redefine sustainable city development and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The feasibility study, once completed, will assess land use planning, environmental sustainability, smart transport networks, housing and industrial zoning, and public-private partnership models for financing the project.
He emphasized that the proposed Green Digital City will embody Ghana’s vision for inclusive, technology-driven growth, while serving as a model for responsible urbanization and environmental stewardship in Africa.
