Ghana’s Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is preparing a series of legislative proposals aimed at transforming sports financing and development across the country. The initiatives seek to create sustainable funding channels and enhance the governance of sports institutions nationwide.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Ayariga, who previously served as Minister for Youth and Sports, revealed that the Ministry will soon present several key bills for consideration. Among these are the Sports Fund Bill, the Sports Fund Regulations, the National Sports College Bill, and an Anti-Doping Bill. He said these legislative measures are intended to modernize Ghana’s sports framework and ensure long-term financial stability within the sector.
“The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will bring the following for consideration: Sports Fund Bill, Sports Fund Regulations, National Sports College Bill, Anti-Doping, and others,” Ayariga said.
Highlighting the significance of the Sports Fund Bill, Mr. Ayariga described it as a cornerstone for sustainable sports financing. The proposed Fund will establish a dedicated pool of money to support sports development, athlete welfare, and capacity-building initiatives. It also seeks to promote equitable distribution of resources across different sporting disciplines and regions.
The initiative reflects government recognition of the need for predictable and transparent financial support for sports, following years of budgetary shortfalls and fluctuating sponsorships. Mr. Ayariga stressed that the creation of such a Fund would help Ghana invest more effectively in athlete development, infrastructure growth, and sports promotion.
Once enacted, the complementary regulations and supporting legislation—such as the National Sports College and Anti-Doping bills—are expected to ensure accountability in the use of resources, enhance technical training, and align Ghana’s sports governance with international best practices.
