Former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says Ghana needs visionary leadership and groundbreaking ideas to progress, not leaders defined by their personal wealth. Speaking to constituents in Dormaa West, the former Vice President emphasized that elections are a contest of ideas and a commitment to transforming lives, rejecting the notion that flaunting riches secures political power.
“Ghanaians do not vote based on personal wealth but on the ideas a candidate offers,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “No one uses their own money to develop a country. You cannot ask people to look at your properties and vote for you. What truly matters are the ideas you present to the electorate—ideas that can transform lives and drive national development.”
Dr Bawumia emphasized that his campaign is built on practical, transformative policies designed to strengthen the economy, create jobs, and ensure inclusive development across all sectors.
“It is not about money; it is about vision and ideas, and that is what I bring,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Dormaa West Constituency Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Owusu, says Dr. Bawumia’s temperament and style of leadership are clear indications of a man destined to win. Mr. Owusu praised the NPP flagbearer aspitant for his patience and maturity in handling political attacks, saying his focus on unity rather than division sets him apart.
“Everything indicates that Dr. Bawumia is poised to win. This is evident in his conduct throughout the campaign—he does not respond to insults because he understands the greater responsibility of uniting everyone after the elections,” he stated.
Mr. Owusu noted that the NPP’s morale had been depleted prior to Dr. Bawumia’s selection as the flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 elections. However, he credited Dr. Bawumia with revitalizing the party’s spirit and improving its showing in the last election.
“If we are to be truthful, before Dr. Bawumia was elected as flagbearer ahead of the 2024 polls, the party was in disarray. I believe we would not have secured more than 20 percent of the votes had the elections been held at that time,” he said.
He applauded the national executives for holding an early congress, explaining that the decision will give the flagbearer enough time to mobilize support across the country.
“We also want to thank the party’s leadership for organizing an early congress. This will give him enough time to prepare and campaign effectively,” he added.
