The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has urged Ghanaians and businesses to stop pricing goods and services in U.S. dollars, stressing that the Ghana cedi remains the only legal tender in the country.
Speaking at the official launch of Cedi@60 in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Dr. Forson described the continuous pricing of goods and services in foreign currency as a practice that undermines the value of the cedi and weakens national economic stability.
He emphasised that the cedi has endured over the years as a symbol of Ghana’s sovereignty, stability, and economic resilience, noting that citizens must protect and preserve its dignity.
“The Ghana cedi remains the only legal tender of our sovereign republic. The U.S. dollar is not our currency. The continuous pricing of goods and services in U.S. dollars will only hurt us. Let’s stop it, and let’s stop it now,” he cautioned.
The Minister said the government remains committed to ensuring a strong and stable cedi through sound fiscal discipline and effective economic management. He noted that recent gains made by the currency have been maintained due to the government’s prudent measures.
Dr. Forson also reminded Ghanaians that maintaining the sanctity of the cedi is a shared responsibility, urging citizens to become “vanguards” in protecting the currency from practices that erode its value.
“As we celebrate 60 years of the cedi, let us speak of it with pride — not as a burden but as a badge of our economic independence,” he added.
