The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Francis Addo Akumatey, has taken the monthly National Sanitation Day to a new level by launching a special initiative dubbed “Operation Clean Your Frontage: Operation Evacuate All Decades of Heaped Refuse Dumps within the Centres of Our Communities in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.”

As part of this month’s National Sanitation Day activities at Oterkporlu, the Assembly began evacuating decades-old refuse dumps from the township. In an interview with GBC News, Mr. Akumatey expressed his commitment to improving sanitation across the municipality, stating that he hopes to make Yilo Krobo one of the cleanest municipalities in the Eastern Region and Ghana as a whole.

The revised sanitation exercise, which received support from the Konor of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, Oklepeme Nuer Anorbah Sasraku, aims to complement the regular National Sanitation Day programme. The MCE said the initiative was introduced to clear long-standing refuse heaps in the centres of many communities that pose health risks to residents.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Martin Abotsi, said his outfit supports the MCE’s vision to enhance sanitation, adding that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility. He called on opinion leaders and community members to contribute their efforts to maintain a clean environment.

However, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Abdul Seidu Rashid, commended the MCE’s dedication to the project, describing his commitment as unmatched. He pledged to work closely with Mr. Akumatey to achieve the municipality’s sanitation goals.

Assembly Member for the Oterkporlu Electoral Area, Philip Sangmortey, expressed his gratitude, noting that the refuse dump had existed even before he was born. He added that previous attempts to remove the dump had been unsuccessful and praised the Assembly for finally taking action.
