The Director General of NADMO, Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd), has inspected two rescue ambulance boats that have been left unused at the Tema Shipyard for nearly a decade.

These boats were initially commissioned to boost rescue operations and provide emergency medical support on Ghana’s waterways but have remained neglected over the years.

Dr. Kuyon voiced strong concern over the current state of these critical assets, emphasizing that their functionality could have been crucial in preventing recent tragic incidents on the nation’s rivers.

Reflecting on a recent drowning on the Oti River, he remarked, “If this ambulance boat had been functional on the Oti River, the recent drowning incident might have been avoided.”

In response, the NADMO Director General has instructed NADMO engineers, alongside the Ghana Navy, to urgently inspect and rehabilitate the boats for immediate redeployment.

This joint effort aims to restore these vessels to operational status without delay. Describing the boats as “life-saving gems,” Dr. Kuyon stressed the importance of bringing them back into active service to protect lives on Ghana’s water bodies.

He called for swift measures to ensure that they fulfill their original mission of providing rapid emergency response where needed.

The revival of these boats signals NADMO’s commitment to strengthening disaster response and safeguarding communities that rely on Ghana’s rivers and lakes.

Immediate refurbishment could significantly reduce risks and improve emergency medical interventions in future water-related crises.
