The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has confirmed that 21 suspects have been identified in connection with incidents of violence recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, which resulted in 15 deaths and 40 injuries across the country.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, November 4, the Minister disclosed that investigations into the electoral disturbances have reached an advanced stage. He revealed that four suspects are currently on bail, five are on remand, while arrest warrants have been issued for the remaining individuals.
According to Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak, the violence cut across several regions and constituencies. During the 2020 elections, fatalities were reported in Techiman South (Bono East), Odododiodio and Ablekuma Central (Greater Accra), Banda and Dormaa West (Bono), and Savelugu (Northern Region), with injuries ranging between one and fifteen per area.
In the 2024 elections, similar violent incidents occurred in Awutu Senya East (Central Region), Tolon (Northern Region), Damango (Savannah Region), Nkoranza South (Bono East), and Offinso North and Ahafo Ano South-West (Ashanti Region), leading to six reported injuries.
Mr. Mohammed Mubarak assured that the government is committed to justice and accountability, adding that the security agencies are actively pursuing all those involved to ensure they face the full rigours of the law.
“We will not allow political violence to undermine our democracy. Every individual linked to these acts will be held accountable, regardless of their status or political affiliation,” he stressed.
He further indicated that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission, is reviewing security protocols to prevent similar election-related violence in future polls.
“Our goal is to make future elections free, fair, and devoid of bloodshed. Ghanaians deserve to exercise their civic rights in peace,” the Minister added.
