6 dead, several injured in stampede at military recruitment exercise at El Wak Stadium

A tragic stampede occurred in Accra on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, during a national military recruitment exercise at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, leaving six people dead and several others injured.

Out of the 28 casualties recorded, five remain in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 12 others are said to be in fairly critical condition and receiving treatment.

The injured were transported to  the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are attending to victims.

Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic,” with hundreds of desperate applicants pushing through the gates. 

Authorities have since suspended the recruitment exercise at the venue as investigations continue into what led to the fatal stampede.

A spokesperson for the Ghana Armed Forces expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in future recruitment exercises.
