Game Day-Climate Players urge solidarity in adaptation & mitigation

Ghana’s climate sector leaders are urging a more robust global response to the climate crisis, calling for major emitters to align their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with the 1.5 degrees celsius target. At COP30 in Belem, Amazonia, Ghana’s Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Mr. Issifu Seidu, called on developed nations to honour their climate finance commitments and operationalize the global adaptation goal. He spoke about Ghana’s investments, including over $200 million in the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated projects and 38 million Euros in climate risk transfers.

Ghana’s delegation shone bright at COP30, showcasing its tireless efforts to tackle climate change through a multi-stakeholder approach. Ghana has spearheaded groundbreaking policies, including the Agriculture Long Term Strategy, National Electric Vehicle Strategy, and National Energy Transition Framework, demonstrating commitment to a sustainable future.

As the country pushes forward, it is operationalizing its Energy Transition Framework and Carbon Market Office, while forging strategic partnerships with Switzerland, Sweden, and Singapore under Article 6.2. Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Mr. Issifu Seidu, mentioned the urgency of global cooperation, stating, “Climate change remains a priority for Ghana, and finding solutions to this crisis that affects livelihoods worldwide is more critical than ever.” Ghana’s voice is clear: united, we can combat climate change and secure a brighter future for all.

The Environmental Protection Authority, through its Chief Executive Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse also outlined sustained measures at improving on Ghana’s resilience to climate change.

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation took center stage, with Director of Environment, Dr. Peter Derry, unveiling Ghana’s impressive climate strides. Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) have surged to 47 as of 2021 to cover a period till 2939. The strides he said  includes robust adaptation and mitigation programs across 19 critical policy areas. 

Stakeholders were urged to unite in pursuit of a transformative, low-carbon future for Ghana. They stressed on collaborative efforts to build a resilient nation, capable of withstanding climate challenges while driving sustainable growth and prosperity.
