The Ghana Medical Association, GMA, says about three thousand (3,000) new cases of cervical cancers are reported at hospitals every year.
Out of this figure, two thousand (2,000) are unable to survive the disease due to late detection and reporting for treatment and management.
The President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobea, disclosed this in Kumasi at the commemoration of the 2019 World Cancer Day.
The GMA President, who is also an Obstetrician Gynecologist, was emphatic that Cervical Cancer is a sexually transmitted disease which is preventable.
Dr. Frank Ankobeah advised girls not to engage in early sexual intercourse and also mature before giving birth to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
He appealed to government to include the treatment of Cervical Cancer under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The Medical Director of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Professor Baffuor Opoku, disclosed that the Oncology Directorate of the Hospital records eight hundred and fifty cases of all forms of cancers every year.
