Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has called for a stronger national commitment to revive Ghana’s agriculture sector. He made the appeal while chairing the 41st National Farmers Day celebration held in Ho on Friday, December 5, 2025.

‎‎He praised farmers for the important role they play in the country, saying they continue to feed the nation, provide foreign exchange through crops like cocoa, and employ about 44% of Ghana’s workforce.

‎Togbe Afede, however, noted that the sector still faces major challenges that must be addressed urgently. He said farmers need both inspiration and practical support to keep working hard.

‎“This is why the inspirational aspects where we inspire our farmers are important, so they can do more,” he said. “Of course, we have the government that will commit to doing more in that regard, while we, the citizens, commit to eating Ghana, so we can help grow Ghana and secure a future for the motherland.”

‎The traditional leader also expressed concern about Ghana’s declining performance in key crops, especially cocoa. He mentioned his recent visit to Hohoe to commission a cocoa processing factory, stressing that the country must do better in adding value to its cocoa.

‎‎“For a country that could do more than a million bags in a particular year, we are now struggling to add value to our cocoa. We must all work hard to ensure that the value of the product goes up so that value addition can be visible,” he said.

‎‎He added that Ghana’s performance in cotton and coffee production has also dropped, and called on all stakeholders to work together to improve the sector.

‎Togbe Afede urged the government, farmers, and citizens to unite in strengthening agriculture to secure Ghana’s future.
